My name is Jonah D Cravey, Jr. I am a twenty year retired police officer from the Suffolk Police Department in Suffolk, VA. During my career, I have received several certifications that had enriched my responsibilities and opportunities within the department. Among them are as follows:
Radar and Lidar Operator
Evidence Collection Officer
Fatality Crash Investigator
Crisis Intervention Team Instructor
Critical Incident Stress Management Team Member
Refuse to be a Victim Instructor (Program from NRA)
Hostage/Crisis Negotiator
DUI Task Force Officer
These responsibilities were in addition to regular patrol assignments that I participated in each tour of duty. I did so along with some of the best men and women I have ever had the privilege to know. In our department, you held your fellow officer accountable in his or her performance of their duties. We served the City of Suffolk with honor, integrity and veracity. Those that did not meet that standard were summarily dismissed. While I was there, the approval rating of the department from its citizens was above 90%. This wasn’t just me. The results here came from a team effort from all those in the department. This made it easy from me to keep my ideals and stay on the straight and narrow. I felt like I owed that to the citizens of Suffolk.
Even now, as I am retired, I still feel a responsibility to citizens to help them by showing them what they need to know. In so doing, I am not only attempting to serve them, but also keeping my fellow officers on their toes as they conduct their duties, as is only fair.
I have received several commendations and retired in good standing. I served with the same transparency as I do with this blog website. Most of the individuals I have arrested shook my hand as I booked them into jail based on the respect I had shown them through the interaction we had. In some situations, crimes that were reported where I was specifically dispatched at a citizen’s request came from these same individuals. I was always careful to protect their anonymity.
I also hold a Bachelors of Pastoral Theology from Atlantic Baptist Bible College (now Carolina Christian College). It was while attending this school that I met, fell in love and married the love of my life, Vicky. She was also instrumental in finding and encouraging me to apply for the police officer position in the Suffolk Police Dept. This entire blogsite is dedicated to her. I love you, sweetie.
